Q & A with Ernest “EJ” Johnson

What is the name of your company?

Johnson Custom Van Solutions

How did you get started and what inspired you to make custom vans?

After owning and traveling in a 2003 Mercedes Sprinter, I soon realized the value of an efficient diesel van, after owning a gas guzzling 8 cylinder version.

Do you have any background in woodwork?

My wood working background is 30 years deep, starting in home remodeling with some surfers from Capistrano Beach, California, then apprenticing with a Scottish cabinet maker. And finally working as a journeyman finish carpenter for a high-end custom home builder in Laguna Beach for 20 years.

What makes your custom van building so unique?

I wanted to create a van that has the organic / land yacht feel, with warm exotic wood throughout, which gives natural light and an epic ambiance.

What market are you going after, demographic, etc.? Beach crowd? Or the Traveler?

This last van I built, I believe is best for a business owner that travels with their sample products and conducts meetings in this classy mobile office. But I can appeal to any demographic, based on their wants and needs.

What makes your custom van building so unique?

My experience in custom woodworking over my career has made this part of Johnson Custom Van Solutions  (JCVS) easier, as I have the tools and the know how to achieve perfection!

What does it include? Bed? Cabinets? Water heater? Solar?

All of the above: it depends on the needs and climate which the owner will mostly traveling to.
IMO, solar / refrigeration / stove and sleeping quarters are most needed, but every persons needs are different.
We at Johnson Custom Van Solutions can accommodate all phases of any RV comfort on the market, or whatever our customer dreams up!

What is your favorite part of the process?

Of coarse seeing the finished product! From turning basically a steel can into a thing of functional art and the look in a persons eyes of excitement of a new adventure.

What kind of contract work and help do you use?

I currently use Aluminess Products, they make all the aluminum exterior appendages, like ladders/ bumpers / roof racks and nerfbars. Joe @ NTG Racing does all suspension and tires.  I have one other trusted person that is the electrical brains behind JCVS,  we make this fun and enjoyable.

Telephone (949) 412-6980.

What is considered the build out time?

Anywhere, from a half a day to 3 months , as I do a lot of window and vent installation too, which goes pretty fast. A full build-out with basically everything, which BTW I am doing a custom Ford Transit for Jeff Archer (CEO of Y0L0 Board) in November of 2016.
